Teach this by first teaching your horse to follow you around. Your horse will usually follow you around naturally, once he gets to know you. But if he doesn't, teach him! Stand in front of your horse and say his name. Coax him with your fingers and step backward. Make your body language and posture inviting. If your horse even shifts his weight toward you a little, reward! Work up to him following you around.
Then you can try at the trot! Run away from your horse. If he doesn't trot with you, start walking again for a few minutes and try again. If you get a reaction out of him, even as simple as raising the head or walking faster, reward! Work up to trotting. Do NOT put the halter on and force him to run. You want this to be his choice and you want it to be play.
