Stand with your horse with your method of teaching colors. You can use a white board with two colored cards taped to it (I like to use yellow and purple at first, rather than two dark colors or two light colors) or you can use different colored ropes. Your pick!
White Board Method:
1. Stand beside your horse and hold out the white board. With your finger, touch the card and say the color of it. Move your finger to the other card and say that color. Then say, "where is ____" and in the blank space, say the color you want your horse to find! When he touches the right one with his nose, praise!
2. Once your horse learns those two colors, work on different colors as well!
Tips:
-Switch around which side the colored cards are often, to make sure your horse isn't just touching the right colors because he remembers which side of the board they're on!
-Work on many different colors if you wish!
Rope Method:
1. Stand in front of your horse holding two ropes. Hold the first one up and say the color, then hold the second one up and say the color. Drop both ropes, and say, "where is ____" and in the blank space, say the color you want your horse to find! When your horse picks up the correct rope you were asking for, praise!
2. Once your horse learns those colors, work on different colors as well!
Tips:
-Switch around which hand the different ropes are in, and toss them on different sides. This is to be sure your horse isn't just picking up the right colored ropes because he remembers which hand they were in and where you drop them.
-Work on many different colors if you wish!
