There is a time and a place for a rope halter. Some horses would hurt themselves if they aren't trained in one. Destiny used to have a pulling habit. She'd rear up while tied to snap the nylon halter to break free. Nylon halters have buckles, so they break. Rope halters are just one continuous rope. They do give more pressure because of this. Since the rope is thinner and there are knots. And, they have the ability to hurt a horse. Nylon halters, positioned wrong, can hurt a horse. But it's a lot less likely to happen than if you used a rope halter.
Anyway, the rope halter was the only thing that fixed Destiny's rearing habit. Now, this wasn't as big of a problem at our old ranch. But at our new one, which is side by side by a highway, there is a big problem with horses breaking free. If they spook and run across the street, they could get hit. It would be good for the horse to wear a rope halter if he pulls. It'll teach him not to pull, so he won't get free and hurt.
Another situation you might need one in is a vet visit. Horses need their care. I'm always open to giving a horses a choice, but they don't get a choice in this situation. When it comes to healthcare, we know best. If horses got a choice in their healthcare, there would be too many horses with health issues.
If you have a horse that pulls, it's always good to have a rope halter. I've talked to many people, and many have said that nylon halters can't break. If people say nylon halters can't break, they've never had a horse pull hard enough.
But if you attach the wrong lead rope, it defeats the purpose of the rope halter. If you attach a lead rope with a clip to the end, the clip could snap off. But if you just tie on a rope on correct, there's no way of it coming undone.
Rope halters when used right, can keep horses safe and healthy. When used wrong, they can hurt horses.
