The thing they call in equestrian sport "bit chewing" is a result of hyperalgesia. The horse tries to move the bit from the injured and thus more sensitive areas to the less inured and less painful ones. A state of hyperalgesia can be caused by influence of the cerebral cortex. When pain is anticipated consciously and is feared by a person, a hyper-excitation of the nociceptive neurons occurs and as a result, any painful effect is perceived as a more painful one. -Alexander Nevzorov
